Problem installing Windows 7 SP1

I would be grateful if someone could help with this: I have just installed 64-bit Windows 7 on a new laptop.

I have done all the updating of Windows that Windows said had to be done but when it came to installing Service Pack 1 it spent a long time downloading the file and an equally long time installing it but when it got near the end and started "configuring" Windows it stopped and said "Failure configuring windows"

The Windows "help" said that I should download and install a file called Update Readiness Tool. I did that and it did not help.

I have also downloaded the SP1 file to try and install it manually but that got to about 90% of the configuring and then failed, and spent the next half hour undoing what it had done

I would not bother to keep trying to install it but for the fact that I have some software that requires SP1 in order to run.

Can anyone suggest how I can get this software installed and configured, please?
