Netflix's US customers get Facebook-sharing tool

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? A long-awaited coming attraction has finally arrived for Netflix's U.S. subscribers. They will now be able to automatically see what their Facebook friends have been watching on the Internet video service, as long as they are willing to open a peephole into their viewing habits, too.

The sharing tool announced Wednesday is rolling out 18 months after Netflix Inc. introduced the feature to its international subscribers.

The expansion exposes the feature to a much wider audience because Netflix has 27 million Internet video subscribers in the U.S. versus 6 million customers in more than 50 other countries and territories. Netflix isn't creating an outlet for the 8.2 million subscribers to its steadily shrinking DVD-by-mail rental service to share what they're checking out on discs.

Netflix withheld the sharing tool in the U.S.to avoid breaking a 1988 law that banned the disclosure of video rental records without a customer's written consent. After several years of lobbying, the Lost Gatos, Calif., company persuaded Congress to revise the law so that subscribers could choose to activate a video-sharing feature.

President Obama signed the amended law in January, clearing the way for Netflix to offer U.S. subscribers another way to find movies and TV shows that may appeal to their tastes. In the process, Netflix hopes to deepen subscriber loyalty and generate positive buzz about the $8-per-month service as the company strives to reach its goal of reaching 90 million customers.

"This has been a missing link for us," said Tom Willerer, Netflix's vice president of product innovation. "Being able to see more recommendations from your friends can be a very powerful thing."

Investors apparently believe the new feature will increase Netflix's popularity and, by extension, its profits. Netflix shares stock surged by $10.25, or 5.6 percent, to close at $192.36.

The sharing tool could backfire if it raises privacy concerns as subscribers discover how much their Facebook friends are finding out about their viewing preferences.

Netflix is trying to make sure that happens by corralling the sharing within individual subscriber accounts when the feature is first turned on. The company plans to offer all its U.S. subscribers the option by the end of this week.

Once the sharing feature is activated, new rows labeled "Friends' Favorites" and "Watched by your friends" will be displayed within a subscriber's account. On the flip side, any subscriber who has signed up for Facebook sharing will have their movie selections displayed with the accounts of their Facebook friends unless an extra step is taken to exclude a specific movie or TV show. What subscribers are watching won't be posted on Facebook's social network unless they go into their setting to permit the sharing on that website, too.

Beside the general rows of recommendations, Netflix will also devote rows to the watching lists of up for five Facebook friends that the company's computer formulas will select, based on an analysis of common interests. Netflix eventually hopes to allow subscribers to designate the Facebook friends whose video opinions that they like the most, Willerer said.

In households where multiple people share the same Netflix account, the sharing option will be tied to the Facebook account of the primary subscriber. Netflix is currently testing technology that allows several people using the same Netflix account to splinter into individual profiles that sorts their viewing histories into different queues. If the experiment is successful, Willerer said Netflix may add more ways to share video recommendations under the same account.

Tiny shops and boutiques get an online lifeline - Business ...

Small retailers at risk of getting crushed by Internet giants like Amazon turn to a Canadian start-up

Online lifeline

For small stores, standing out online isn?t easy. Surging Internet sales are pushing major retailers to spend big on technology to improve their web presence?$60 billion a year in the U.S. alone, by one estimate. To compete against giants like Amazon and eBay, hundreds of shops and boutiques are turning to a Canadian start-up, Shopcaster.

The site draws on the appeal of image-focused websites like Pinterest (where users ?pin? photos of products they like to online bulletin boards) to help stores advertise and sell their goods online. ?In the course of talking to retailers, [the Shopcaster team] found out they were having trouble with their online presence,? says CEO Judy Sims. Founders Aron Jones and Matt O?Leary realized there was a big opportunity. With an initial investment from Toronto firm Mantella Venture Partners and an additional $1-million round of financing last July, Shopcaster quickly began signing up stores, first in Toronto, and more recently, in Vancouver and Montreal.

Of the 875 stores now signed up to Shopcaster, about 180 are using the site?s ?click-to-buy? service. Retailers sign up for free to use the site, but are charged a 15 per cent commission on online sales. With the emphasis on extending the feel of walking into a boutique and discovering a one-of-a-kind gem, shops such as Toronto?s Even & Odd, which sells home decor, are doing particularly well on Shopcaster. Owner Carmen Tsang says some of the shop?s bestselling items get thousands of views on the site.

Shopcaster has yet to turn a profit and faces stiff competition from sites such as Shopify, which sells e-commerce platforms to retailers, and even Pinterest, which serves as a massive window-shopping site driving sales for retailers. Shopcaster is now planning expansion into the U.S. and is hiring a scout in New York to seek out local boutiques for the site. It plans to facilitate cross-border shipping so that customers can readily order items from any city. After all, borders are easier to cross online. As Sims says: ?World domination, that?s the plan.?

Can gay child share tent? Boy Scouts survey members

Darrell Byers / Reuters file

Robin O'Neal holds a sign during a prayer vigil at the Boy Scouts of America headquarters in Irving, Texas, on Feb. 6. The Boy Scouts of America have delayed until May a vote on whether to end a controversial ban on gay members.

By Miranda Leitsinger, Staff Writer, NBC News

?Bob is 15 years old, and the only openly gay Scout in a Boy Scout troop.?Is it acceptable or unacceptable for the troop leader to allow Bob to tent with a heterosexual boy on an overnight camping trip??

?Tom started in the program as a Tiger Cub, and finished every requirement for the Eagle Scout Award at 16 years of age.?At his board of review Tom reveals that he is gay. Is it acceptable or unacceptable for the review board to deny his Eagle Scout award based on that admission???

These are some of the questions on a survey being conducted by the Boy Scouts of America as the private youth organization prepares to decide whether it should end its controversial policy banning gay Scouts and leaders. The Boy Scouts intends to make a decision in late May on the ban, which has roiled the organization in recent years.

More than 1.4 million surveys have been emailed to registered volunteers, parents of Scouts and alumni. The questionnaires were part of a biannual survey, ?The Voice of the Scout Survey,? that the BSA conducts of leaders, parents and youth over 14 years old. But this time, the BSA used the survey to add questions about the policy banning gays (those questions went only to adults).

BSA spokesman Deron Smith, who provided the questions on the survey to NBC News, said in an email that ?the BSA is committed to dialogue on the topic of its membership standards policy, within the Scouting family at the local and national levels.? The group was in the listening phase, which included the survey of key stakeholders, he added.?

The Boy Scouts? policy has increasingly been a sore spot for the organization over the last year, following the dismissal of a den leader because she is a lesbian and the denial of the Eagle Scout rank to a California teen because he is gay. Some of the questions on the survey provide similar scenarios and ask respondents how acceptable or unacceptable these situations are.

Tristam Harrington

Tristam Harrington, an assistant district commissioner of the Water and Woods Field Service Council in Michigan, provided a screenshot of the survey, which he completed Wednesday morning.

When the BSA announced in late January that it may ditch the national policy and instead let local sponsoring organizations decide if gays can join, the organization received a flood of responses from both sides. It then decided to push a decision to May, when some 1,400 members of Scouting's National Council will vote on a resolution the Boy Scouts' officers are crafting on the policy. The survey results will be shared with those officers, Smith said.

Tristam Harrington, an assistant district commissioner for the Scouts in Okemos, Mich., who opposes changing the policy, said he thought the BSA had done a good job with the survey.

The members ?have the right to have their say and I think it?s better for them to understand exactly where their membership stands,? he said Wednesday. ?Are you just assuming it needs to change or is this really a groundswell from within the organization? Is this an outside influence? A combination of both? ? You don?t really know unless you ask, and I think it?s fabulous that they?re actually, you know, taking the time to now ask.?

Steve Gates, Scoutmaster of Troop 98 in Taos, N.M., who supports changing the policy, agreed with Harrington.

??They come at it from all sides and I think that?s good. I don?t see it as any kind of a biased survey,? he said.

But he added that some of the questions may rile up some members opposed to the change who could perceive talk on the issue in the survey as having validated homosexuality.

The survey was developed by a third-party research provider, North Star Opinion Research, with input from volunteer and professionals representing diverse viewpoints, Smith said. The Boy Scouts have asked for the surveys to be returned by April 4.

The BSA also asked if the currently policy was a ?core value? of Scouting and if respondents would leave the BSA if a decision was made that disagreed with their view.

Other questions on the survey include:

  • A gay male troop leader, along with another adult leader, is taking a group of boys on a camping trip following the youth protection guidelines of two-deep leadership. Is it acceptable or unacceptable for the gay adult leader to take adolescent boys on an overnight camping trip?
  • A troop is chartered by an organization that does not believe homosexuality is wrong and allows gays to be ministers. The youth minister traditionally serves as the Scoutmaster for the troop. The congregation hires a youth minister who is gay. Is it acceptable or unacceptable for this youth minister to serve as the Scoutmaster??
  • Johnny, a first grade boy, has joined Tiger Cubs with his friends. Johnny?s friends and their parents unanimously nominate Johnny?s mom, who is known by them to be lesbian, to be the den leader. Johnny?s pack is chartered to a church where the doctrine of that faith does not teach that homosexuality is wrong. Is it acceptable or unacceptable for his mother to serve as a den leader for his Cub Scout den?
  • David, a Boy Scout, believes that homosexuality is wrong. His troop is chartered to a church where the doctrine of that faith also teaches that homosexuality is wrong. Steve, an openly gay youth, applies to be a member in the troop and is denied membership. Is it acceptable or unacceptable for this troop to deny Steve membership in their troop?

If you are a current or former member of the Boy Scouts and would like to share your thoughts on how your troop, pack or council is handling the BSA's decision on the membership policy, you can email the reporter at?miranda.leitsinger@msnbc.com. We may use some comments for a follow-up story, so please specify if your remarks can be used and provide your name, hometown, age, Boy Scout affiliation and a phone number.

avast! Premier 8

By Neil J. Rubenking

Most security vendors offer a standalone antivirus tool as well as a security suite that rounds out protection with such features as a firewall, a spam filter, and parental control. These days quite a few vendors offer a higher-level suite with additional features such as backup, performance tune-up, or password management. avast! Premier 8 ($89.99 direct for three licenses) does add several features not found in avast!'s basic suite, but the additions really don't merit a $20 bump in price.

The program's main window looks exactly like that of avast! Internet Security 8, except for the window title. It has the same Windows 8-inspired touch-friendly buttons, and the same big panel that reflects overall security status. You'll have to dig a little to find those premier-only features.

Same Antivirus Protection
Antivirus protection in this suite is exactly the same as in the basic suite, and in avast!'s free antivirus. Please read my review of avast! Free Antivirus 8 for details beyond the brief summary that follows.

Getting avast! installed on a couple of my twelve malware-infested test systems required hours of remote-control diagnosis and repair by tech support. On my new scale defining ease of installation, that rates two stars. A product that installed and ran with no hassle would earn five stars; one that utterly failed to install on one or more test systems would get just one.

Tested with a brand-new malware collection, avast! detected 75 percent of the samples and scored 5.5 points. Both detection rate and score are very close to the average of products tested using my previous collection of malware. With 6.6 points each, Webroot SecureAnywhere Complete 2013 and Norton 360 (2013) scored much better. For details on how I perform this test, see How We Test Malware Removal.

Avast! did a good job of blocking access to malware-hosting websites, but its overall score in my malware blocking test was 8.5 points, a little below the average of products tested with the previous malware set. Webroot owns the top score in that test, 9.9 of 10 possible points. To learn more about my malware blocking test, please read How We Test Malware Blocking.

FAA approves Boeing plan to fix 787's batteries

(AP) ? A Boeing plan to redesign the 787 Dreamliner's fire-plagued lithium-ion batteries won approval Tuesday from the Federal Aviation Administration, moving the cutting-edge planes a step closer to flying passengers again.

The plan includes changes to the internal battery components to minimize the possibility of short-circuiting, which can lead to overheating and cause a fire. Among the changes are better insulation of the battery's eight cells and the addition of a new containment and venting system, the FAA said in a statement.

The FAA statement didn't provide an estimate for when the grounded planes might return to service. Rep. Rick Larsen, D-Wash., who was briefed by the agency, said that if all goes well, the FAA could give final approval by mid- to late April for the 787 to resume flight.

Boeing would still have to retrofit the 50 planes already delivered to eight airlines in seven countries, Larsen said in an interview. That could mean the plane wouldn't return to the skies until late April or early May, he said.

First, Boeing's redesigned batteries have to pass a series of 20 separate tests lab, Larsen said, then flight tests would follow.

"If there's any one test that isn't passed, it's back to the drawing board for that particular part of the tests," he said.

So far, test flights of two 787s have been approved ? one with a complete prototype of the new battery, the other with only a new, more robust containment box for the battery, Boeing spokesman Marc Birtel said.

The plan is an outline for a recertification of the plane's batteries, the FAA said. The 787 has two identical lithium-ion batteries, one of which is located toward the front of the plane and powers cockpit electrical systems, the other toward the rear and used to start an auxiliary power unit while the plane is on the ground, among other functions.

Every item that is part of an airplane, down to its nuts and bolts, must be certified as safe before FAA approves that type of plane as safe for flight.

The 787 fleet worldwide has been grounded by the FAA and civil aviation authorities in other countries since Jan. 16, following a battery fire on a Dreamliner parked in Boston and a smoking battery that led to the emergency landing of another 787 in Japan.

"This comprehensive series of tests will show us whether the proposed battery improvements will work as designed," Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood said in a statement. "We won't allow the plane to return to service unless we're satisfied that the new design ensures the safety of the aircraft and its passengers."

The airliner's troubles have raised concerns that the FAA has ceded too much responsibility for evaluating the safety of new aircraft to manufacturers. To save manpower, the FAA designates employees at aircraft makers and their subcontractors to conduct the safety testing of new planes. Boeing's battery testing concluded that short-circuiting wouldn't lead to a fire and that the chance of a smoke event was one in every 10 million flight hours.

Instead, there were two battery failures when the entire fleet had clocked less than 52,000 flight hours.

The FAA's approval of Boeing's plan "is a critical and welcome milestone toward getting the fleet flying again and continuing to deliver on the promise of the 787," Jim McNerney, the aircraft maker's CEO, said in a statement.

The 787 is Boeing's newest and most technologically advanced plane. Its grounding on Jan. 16, an enormous black eye for Boeing, marked the first time since 1979 that FAA had ordered every plane of a particular type to stay out of the air for safety reasons.

UBS analyst David Strauss estimated that the 787 will cost Boeing $6 billion this year. Besides the battery problems, the plane already costs more to build than it brings in from customers.

United Airlines is the only U.S. carrier with Dreamliners in its fleet. It has six, plus another 44 on order. American and Delta have also ordered 787s. Boeing has orders for more than 800 of the planes from airlines around the globe.

Steven Udvar-Hazy, CEO of Air Lease Corp., which has ordered 12 of the planes, said it could still take months for the plane to fly again and that a very long-term grounding could damage the 787 Dreamliner brand.

"It's important to get the airplane back in the air," Udvar-Hazy said while attending an airplane finance conference in Orlando, Fla. "Every plane has mechanical issues, but this was one that was considered serious by the authorities and I think Boeing has done everything it can to get that under control."

Udvar-Hazy has had weekly updates from Boeing's CEO of commercial airplanes, Ray Conner, and daily conversations with others at the airplane manufacturer. He has then relayed that information to his airline customers around the world.

"Boeing has been very transparent and I think they've made a very concerted effort to address this issue ... to come up with a fix that hopefully is a permanent fix, not just sort of a Band-Aid solution," he said.

Boeing plans to begin test flights within days, Birtel said. The new battery design will be tested on a plane that has been identified elsewhere as being built for LOT Polish Airlines. Boeing also plans to fly a 787 that is used exclusively for testing. That plane has the stronger battery box, and will also be used for unrelated engine tests.

Before the fire on Jan. 7, Boeing shares had closed at $77.69. They closed as low as $73.65 three weeks later, after the planes had been grounded. But the shares have been recovering as anticipation grew for a battery fix. Boeing's gains have outpaced the strong rise in the Dow Jones industrial average, of which Boeing Co. is a member.

On Tuesday, Boeing shares rose $1.22 to close at $84.16, and rose another 28 cents to $84.44 in aftermarket trading.

Can Aspirin Keep Skin Cancer At Bay?

The latest study suggests that the popular pain killer can inhibit melanoma.

In the largest investigation of its kind, published in the journal Cancer, researchers found that women who regularly take aspirin have a decreased risk of developing melanoma, and that the protection may be cumulative ? the longer they take it, the lower their risk.

More than 61,000 people were diagnosed with skin cancer in the U.S. in 2009, the latest year for which statistics were collected by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), and deaths from?melanoma cost $3.5 billion in lost productivity each year. Despite greater awareness of the dangers of tanning, as well as the importance of protecting sun-exposed exposed skin with clothing or sunscreen, diagnoses of melanoma have inched upward by 2% each year between 2000 and 2009.

(MORE: Can Aspirin Ward Off Skin Cancer?)

In the latest study, the researchers studied 59,806 women between ages 50 to 79 enrolled in the Women?s Health Initiative who were followed for around 12 years. The women answered questions about their medication use, diet and other lifestyle habits such as sun exposure. And even after controlling for skin cancer risk factors such as tanning?and low use of sunscreen, the women who reported taking aspirin at least twice a week showed a 21% lower risk of melanoma than the women who didn?t take the pain killer. And the longer they stayed on aspirin, the lower their risk; women who used aspirin regularly for one to four years for example, showed an 11% lower risk of melanoma compared to those who didn?t take the pills for that time, while women who continued taking aspirin for five or more years enjoyed a 30% lower chance of developing melanoma.

How is the pain killer connected to cancer?

The explain could lie with inflammation, the potentially damaging reaction by the immune system to stresses, irritants and foreign intruders such as bacteria and viruses. Since aspirin works to reduce inflammation, it could help to quiet down the processes that can trigger cells to grow abnormally. The study isn?t the first to connect the anti-inflammatory effects of aspirin to a lower risk of developing melanoma, but it is the largest to see a significant pattern among pain killer users. In other studies, aspirin has been associated with a lower risk of other cancers, potentially for the same reason that curbing inflammation may also inhibit tumors. A study published last year linked aspirin and other pain relief drugs like ibuprofen, called?nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), to a 46% lower risk of colon, lung and prostate cancers. But the current study did not find a protective effect against melanoma for NSAIDs other than aspirin.

(MORE: Aspirin, a Wonder Drug? Studies Show It May Prevent Cancer)

The findings are exciting for the cancer prevention, since aspirin is widely available and inexpensive. But because the study only compared past use to melanoma outcomes, the researchers say the next step in confirming the results would be to conduct a clinical study in which some participants take aspirin on a regular basis and others do not, to test whether the pain killer can prevent melanoma. Any benefits, they say, will have to be weighed against the risks of taking aspirin, which include stomach bleeding and clotting disorders.

?There?ve been about eight studies that have looked at melanoma, and about half of them find slightly lower risk and half find no connection at all. You look at the totality of the evidence, and right now it?s rather mixed,??Eric Jacobs, an epidemiologist at the American Cancer Society told NPR.

Until the data on aspirin and skin cancer is solidified, he and other cancer experts recommend avoiding tanning beds, using sunscreen with SPF above 15 and finding shade and covering up when in the sun in order to lower? chances of developing skin cancer.

Google cutting 1,200 more Motorola jobs

(AP) ? Google is cutting an additional 1,200 jobs in its Motorola division as the unprofitable cellphone maker struggles to compete.

Last summer, Google Inc. announced 4,000 Motorola job cuts. The latest reductions are in addition to those and will be in countries including the U.S., China and India.

"These cuts are a continuation of the reductions we announced last summer," Google spokeswoman Niki Fenwick said in an email.

When Mountain View, Calif.-based Google bought Motorola last year for $12.4 billion, it had about 20,000 employees.

The online search leader also expects to pare jobs at the division with a planned $2.35 billion sale of the Motorola set-top business, which has about 7,000 employees. Google had about 53,000 employees as of late September.

Google bought Motorola primarily for its 17,000 patents, bolstering the company in the mobile device arms race with other technology companies. The cellphone business has lost market share to Apple and Samsung, however, and posted operating losses of $1.1 billion since Google completed the Motorola deal in May.

Analysts have been concerned that adding a phone manufacturing business could hurt Google's profitability and potentially alienate the other device makers that use Google's Android mobile operating system. Samsung, HTC and other phone makers run Android. Apple and BlackBerry have their own systems.

The Wall Street Journal reported the Motorola job cuts in Friday's editions.

Google shares rose $3.39 to $835.99 in premarket trading.

AP source: Obama poised to pick Perez for Labor

(AP) ? President Barack Obama is poised to select Justice Department official Thomas Perez to be the next labor secretary, according to two people familiar with the deliberation process.

Perez' nomination to the Labor Department could come as early as Monday, the people familiar with the process said Saturday. They spoke on condition of anonymity because the official announcement has not yet been made. White House spokesman Matt Lehrich declined to comment.

Perez, 51, has led the Justice Department's Civil Rights Division since 2009 and previously served as Maryland's labor secretary. He is expected to have solid support from organized labor and the Hispanic community, which is eager to have Hispanic representation in Obama's cabinet.

Perez was the first Latino elected to the Montgomery County Council in Maryland, where he served from 2002 to 2006. If confirmed, he would replace Hilda Solis, who resigned in January to return to her native California.

Perez would come to the Labor Department as Obama pushes a major immigration overhaul, which could include changes in how employers hire guest workers. Labor Department officials have also taken a prominent role in supporting Obama's effort to raise the federal minimum wage from $7.25 to $9 an hour.

At the Justice Department, Perez has played a leading role in the agency's decision to challenge voter ID laws in Texas and South Carolina that could restrict minority voting rights. A federal court later struck down the Texas law and delayed implementation of the law in South Carolina until after the 2012 election.

Perez was easily confirmed by the Senate for his Justice Department post, but since then, some GOP lawmakers have criticized his role in persuading the city of St. Paul, Minn., to withdraw a lending discrimination lawsuit from the Supreme Court. In exchange, the Justice Department declined to join two whistle-blower lawsuits against St. Paul that could have returned millions in damages to the federal government.

The St. Paul case had challenged the use of statistics to prove race discrimination under the 1968 Fair Housing Act, and Justice Department officials were concerned the court could strike down the practice.

A letter last year from four Republican lawmakers, including Sen. Chuck Grassley of Iowa and Rep. Darrell Issa of California, criticized Perez for a "quid pro quo arrangement" that potentially cost taxpayers more than $180 million.

House fire kills five children and two adults in rural Kentucky

LOUISVILLE, Kentucky (Reuters) - Five children and two adults died in a house fire in rural Knox County, Kentucky, on Saturday, in a blaze that was reported by a neighbor who saw smoke but was unable to reach the home's occupants, police said.

The two adults who died lived in the house with their three children, said Kentucky State Police Sergeant Jackie Pickrell. The other two children were visiting the home,

Investigators are seeking to find the cause of the fire at the brick and timber home in Gray, a small community near Corbin, Kentucky, 130 miles southeast of Louisville.

"A neighbor had noticed the smoke and responded and tried to get them out," Pickrell said.

But the seven people inside the home are believed to have already died when the neighbor responded. Investigators suspect they succumbed to smoke inhalation, although the cause of death will be determined at an autopsy.

?It?s something that all Chavistas should do. Something they need to do,? says Higdalia Az?car, who was not deterred by stories of daylong waits ?We came here for the love. We wouldn?t miss it.?

The line stretches for miles, weaving through shade and sunlight, past public parks and in front of the bleachers where Venezuelans watched Ch?vez salute military parades.

On Friday morning, state-run television said more than 2 millions Venezuelans had made the trip to the low-slung military academy where Ch?vez?s open casket has been since Wednesday.

Vice President Nicolas Maduro, who will be sworn in as interim president this evening, on Thursday extended the viewing for an additional seven days due to the response. Thereafter, Ch?vez?s body will be embalmed, much the way Russia?s Vladmir Lenin and China?s Mao Zedong were, and displayed in a glass case for eternity, Mr. Maduro says.

Once inside, visitors said they saw Ch?vez wearing his signature red beret and sash. Photography was not permitted, but visitors say that on Wednesday and Thursday, Ch?vez was dressed in a blue suit. That was swapped out this morning ? before his funeral ? for his military fatigues.

?I was filled with sadness when I approached his casket,? says Juana Uscategui, an elementary school teacher. She waited 15 hours in a wheelchair to catch a glimpse. ?When I finally saw, I was overcome with joy, as he was finally resting. He wore his red hat, his suit and medals. He was beautiful.?

For Lenin Benitez, a political organizer, it was a two-day journey.

After driving overnight from the state of Lara in the northwest, he queued up because it was ?necessary to see him again and to show to the world that Venezuela stood with their president.?

He adored the idea of embalming the president.

?In the rest of the world, people tell their children stories about fictitious heroes, like Batman and Robin,? Mr. Benitez says. ?Here in Venezuela, we can tell our story of Hugo Ch?vez and his deeds. But more than that, we can show him to our children and continue to inspire the revolution.?

When it comes to obtaining public funding for an NFL stadium, the best approach is to not approach the voters directly.? In Miami, the plan making its way through the legislature would, if successful, result in a public referendum.

Thus, getting the bills passed has been much easier than the voter-circumvention strategy employed elsewhere, such as Minnesota.

Via the Associated Press, three legislative committees in Florida have approved a bill that would guarantee $3 million per year for 30 years to help pay for an upgrade of SunLife Stadium, which is owned by Dolphins owner Stephen Ross.? If the bill becomes law, the voters will then become involved.

Some lawmakers nevertheless oppose the effort.? ?The NFL is conning us, vote against this madness,? Rep. Bill Hager, a Republican representing Delray Beach, told the AP.

Nationwide, the trend among voters is to reject such measures.? In Miami, current polling conducted not by the Dolphins indicates that opposition is significant.

That?s why the Dolphins need to make an extra-big splash in free agency this year.? They need to create the kind of excitement that will increase supporters of the effort and motivate them to show up and cast ballots at the appropriate.

Still, unless and until the Dolphins have the leverage that comes from a potential relocation of the franchise, the locals will remain ambivalent, at best.

Using Your Secret Stalking Skills to Grow Your Business Through ...

(Some of the steps listed here are very elementary, so if you are an old pro, know that I?m trying to write to the beginner as well as the experienced)

There is a cartoon going around, maybe you have seen it, depicting Stalking in two formats ? Creepy and Socially Acceptable. One stalker is using a pair of binoculars and looking into his neighbor?s yard while the second is on the computer using Facebook.

The fact is, in the business of Internet Marketing and Social Media, there is a lot of stalking done in efforts to target our marketing message or put our brand in front of the right people. Getting your demographics right and then finding those people online, who are freely putting most of their information out there for all to see, is the simplest and most affordable way to get the most leverage out of your brand and content.

While there are hundreds of articles online regarding social media best practices, this article will focus purely on social media stalking.

    Stalker Step 1:

Pick a quality social monitoring tool. There are hundreds of tools on the market and all offering different value for different prices. No matter what your budget is, there will be a tool for you ? the important thing is to pick one and utilize it.

The purpose of using tools is not only for the convenience of having one dashboard to look at each day for all your accounts, but also for the convenience of reporting. Monitoring your progress through reports doesn?t have to be complicated and can be as easy as a quick glance at the increase in the amount of people who followed you on Twitter or the "reach" of any particular Tweet. Reporting over time will show you what you are doing right and what you could improve.

    Stalker Step 2:

Build Personas. The creation of personas is to help you define specifics around who your target audience is in a very specific way. By definition, a persona is a fictional character that is created to represent a clear picture of your market. Some people create numerous personas to represent segments of their target audience.

Many people have written about building personas. The most common advice is to name attributes of each persona to include: age, sex, ethnicity, occupation, lifestyle, goals and hobbies. There are a number of defining attributes that you can pick in building your personas. Ian Lurie wrote about Personas in 2007 and his information is still apt - http://www.portent.com/blog/internet-marketing/get_in_your_customers_heads_cr.htm

    Stalker Step 3:

Find Your People. Now that you have built your personas, now it is time to find your people online in their social media environment or habitat. To find your people requires the building of a map. Start off by making a list of all the keywords associated with each of your personas. Keywords can include job titles, brands they buy, hobbies, cities they live in, book titles, music, or ways they define themselves. See your persona attributes for keyword ideas.

Now, break out your keywords under topic titles. Topic titles can include your persona?s name, yes they should have a name. For example, if you are targeting a middle aged woman who has a lot of discretionary income who travels at least four times a year, who own a luxury vehicle, owns only Apple products, whose children are grown ? you can call this persona ?Luxury Middle Aged Women? or you can call her by her persona name.

Topic titles can also simply be the keywords themselves, such as: retired, traveler, art collector, Mercedes owner, etc.

    Stalker Step 4:

Once your keyword list is complete, you are going to now build a strategy around finding the right people online and you are going to start with Twitter. While finding your people you are going to categorize them in Twitter lists, which will help you stay organized and keep everything in order.

Now, starting with your keyword list let?s start finding people. The process is actually quite simple. The first part of your Twitter search will begin with the use of SEOmoz.org?s tool Followerwonk. Within Followerwonk.com you are going to Search Twitter Bios, which is a tab at the top left portion of the page. When you click on this tab you will be taken to a search box.

    ?

After clicking on "Search Twitter Bios" a search box will open. If you click on ?more options? beneath that box you have the opportunity to put in more search parameters. Within the "search box" type in one of your keywords.

I typed in the term ?art collector? and received 1,642 results.

    ?

Each time you find somebody within your target, you will "Follow" them and add them to your Twitter list. You can build your lists as you add people. After you follow somebody, dropdown the button next to Follow and click ?Add or Remove From Lists.? Then click ?Create A List? and type ?Art Collector?. You can then make this list private so that only you can see it. Building lists inside of Twitter helps you keep your prospects organized.

Because there can, at times, be so many people on Followerwonk to choose from, as I discovered just within the search term ?art collector?, you can start with just a handful of people ranging from those with a high number of followers to those with a low number of followers. Your display will let you sort results based on Tweets, Following, Followers, Days Old, and Social Authority. Keep a nice mix within your list; following those with fewer followers could result in those people as a more likely prospect in following you back.

Next, you will use Twitter?s search function to search Tweets with keywords. For instance, if you are looking for all women who own a Mercedes, this information may not be in their bio but they may be talking about it in a Tweet. To search Tweets to go Twitter.com/search. Within the search box you can use one word or a combination of words. If you want the combination of words to show up together include parenthesis around the term. For example ?Mercedes owner? will only bring up tweets with those two words mentioned together.

    Stalker Step 5:

Keep track of your work using an Excel spreadsheet, aka Super Stalker Excel Spreadsheet.

Finding where your prospects are on Facebook, Google Plus, Linkedin and Pinterest will start with Twitter but doesn?t end here. You are going to need this spreadsheet as a reference as you complete the other steps.

    Stalker Step 6:

After you have built out your Twitter following or at least built up a good strong list, you are going to find out where your prospects are on other social media platforms. Some people list links to their other social media accounts on their Twitter profile. If they don?t you may have to visit their website to find out this information.

In our example with Jesse Williams, the ?art collector? he not only shows you how to find him on Facebook and Pinterest but also what his other Twitter handles are. Most people just share their website, as with this example where ?Life Coach? was searched for.

When I go to Carla Ferrer?s website I see her social media icons in the right upper-hand corner of her page ? bingo. Now I know how to find her on Facebook, Pinterest and Youtube. (evil laugh here)

I will now visit each of Carla?s social media pages and either ?Like? her, ?Follow? her, add her to my Circles and so on. I will also add information about each of her pages and her website address to my Super Stalker Excel Spreadsheet.

    Stalker Step 7:

After you have built out your spreadsheet, created a long healthy list of people you are following and developed your lists within Twitter, now you are going to do the following:

    a. Pick out a group and begin to listen to what they are talking about. Look for things such as questions they might ask, what their interests are, who they reply to or respond to, or even what articles they promote. Make notes on what you hear within your Super Stalker Excel Spreadsheet.

When doing the above exercise, liken it to being at a social gathering and there is a group of people standing in a corner talking. If you were to join this group, you will start by listening in on the conversation before talking. Second, don?t just talk about yourself, ask questions, offer thoughtful perspective, be kind and respectful.

    b. Use the information you glean to build content ideas for your blog or white papers. Strategize topics and write about them in your blog or put them into your media calendar. If you have specific knowledge about a particular area your prospect is interested in, or maybe you read an article that you feel is helpful to the prospect, share it with them.

    c. Begin putting links to your blog article topics in front of your readers. Start with Twitter and follow through with each social media space ? Google Plus, LinkedIn (preferably within a group you might belong to), Facebook and Pinterest. Caution: Don?t just promote yourself and your links within each post you put up, mix it up and promote other people?s work as well.

    d. Retweet other people?s comments, or make a comment on something they say. Thank them for information that might be valuable. Be genuine.

Stalking is hard work and takes time. Don?t expect to create results overnight. Starting the process and maintaining it will eventually payoff and, well you never know, you might actually like it.

Isakson Co-Sponsors 'Careers for Veterans Act'

WASHINGTON ? U.S. Senator Johnny Isakson today co-sponsored the Careers for Veterans Act, a bill that would help create long-term, sustainable jobs for America?s veterans by transitioning the skills they gained through their service into jobs in the civilian workforce. By making licenses and credentials in their chosen fields more accessible, this bill will help our nation?s veterans and their families by opening up career opportunities for them without adding to the national deficit.

    (File photo)

The bill was introduced by Sen. Richard Burr, R-N.C. Additional co-sponsors include Senators Dean Heller, R-Nev., John Cornyn, R-Texas, and John Boozman, R-Ark.

?America?s military men and women have been trained in specializations that can be applicable in civilian life, and simplifying the transition of these skill sets into civilian careers makes the most of the skills they have developed and provides employers in the public and private sector with well-trained, competent employees,? Senator Burr said. ?This is a common sense move both for veterans and for our nation?s job creators.?

?This is a commonsense approach to addressing the long-term employment needs of our nation?s veterans,? said Senator Isakson. ?The men and women of the United States military have learned valuable skills through their service to our country. Many of these skill sets are also needed in the civilian workplace, and this bill goes a long way in ensuring that veterans can leverage their skills into civilian careers. Our servicemen and women are highly motivated and make some of the best employees. We should help them enter into the civilian workforce so that employers can benefit from their talents and abilities.?

?Considering we have the strongest military in the world, the skills and training that service members receive are top-notch. Allowing these men and women to put their skills to use immediately will lead to stronger communities and small businesses throughout the United States. I?m also pleased that this legislation includes measures to ensure surviving spouses and dependents are eligible for small business benefits after the death of a veteran, which I have also introduced along with Senator Joe Manchin (D-WV). Thank you to Senator Burr for his leadership on this common sense solution to help alleviate unemployment among our nation?s veterans,? said Senator Dean Heller.

?In Texas, we know the value of the remarkable commitment and sacrifice our service members and their families make on our behalf,? Senator Cornyn said. ?Our veterans deserve that same level of commitment from their government. This bill takes a significant step towards assisting unemployed veterans by cutting out the mess of red-tape that currently greets members of our military as they transition from military to civilian life.?

?Our veterans have a proven successful work ethic and they deserve every opportunity we can provide them with the options long-term, meaningful employment,? Boozman said. ?The specialized skills they learned as members of the Armed Forces are an asset to any business and we certainly ought to seize the occasion to provide them priority consideration for careers in government service and other sectors.?

The Careers for Veterans Act would require the Director of Office of Personnel Management (OPM) to coordinate with federal agencies and departments to hire 10,000 veterans to fill existing vacancies, utilizing the Veterans Recruitment Appointment (VRA) authority over the next five years. OPM would have to report to Congress 180 days after enactment regarding implementation and would report yearly to Congress to describe the types of jobs veterans were hired for, grade and pay level, and the number of veterans converted to career appointment.

The bill would also direct individual states to establish a program to administer examinations to each veteran seeking a license or credential without requiring that they undergo training or apprenticeship if they receive a satisfactory score on completion of the examination and have at least 10 years of experience in a military occupational specialty that is similar to a civilian occupation for which the state requires a license or credential. In addition, it includes several sensible small businesses that will assist veterans who are attempting to navigate VA?s service disabled veterans owned small business (SDVOSB) verification process, as well as providing for better transfer of small businesses to spouses following the death of a service disabled veteran owner or active duty service member.

VATICAN CITY -- A date for the start of the papal conclave to elect the next pope will be chosen Friday, the Vatican announced.

Cardinals gathered in Rome will meet at 5 p.m. local time (11 a.m. ET) to vote on the date for the start of the secret ballot process, spokesman Father Federico Lombardi told reporters.

Greg Burke, a Vatican senior communications adviser, told NBC's TODAY that the date was expected to be decided by Friday night.

?The cardinals are going about their work,? he said. ?They are taking their time ? but we do expect by tonight we will get that date.?

It is thought the chosen date could be made public after the meeting, at about 7 p.m. local time (2 p.m. ET).?

Workers prepare stoves in the Sistine Chapel that will be used to burn ballots during the conclave, in a photo released on Thursday.

All of the 115 cardinals taking part in the conclave ? in which a series of closed ballots is held in the Sistine Chapel until a successor for Pope Benedict XVI is chosen ? are now gathered in Rome, Lombardi said.

He added that it was "likely" the conclave would begin next week.

On Thursday, reporters were shown images of preparation work being carried out at the Vatican, including the installation of the chimney stack through which white smoke will flow once a pope has been elected.

NBC News' Ian Johnston contributed to this report.
