Community mourns death of former Graduate School dean | myVU ...

Ernest Campbell

Ernest Q. Campbell, professor emeritus of sociology, former chair of the Department of Sociology and Anthropology, and dean emeritus of the Graduate School at Vanderbilt University, died July 28 at his home in Nashville. He was 86.

Campbell was instrumental in revitalizing his department and the Graduate School through the recruitment of a notable and diverse group of scholars and establishing graduate training programs that furthered the university?s mission. He was nationally known for his sociology research in race relations, desegregation and education.

?Ernest Campbell will be remembered for his academic legacy and contributions, but so much about him was about bigger and broader values that he passed on to the positions and places where he worked,? said current sociology chair Katharine Donato. ?He had a strong commitment to academic freedom and academic integrity, to doing the right thing at the right time, as well as to understanding what racial divisions were and how to break them down.?

Campbell grew up on a farm in rural Oglethorpe County, Ga., in a family that was passionate about education. He finished high school early, starting classes at Young Harris College on his 15th birthday. Transferring to Furman University, he majored in psychology with a minor in sociology and graduated in 1945.

Following graduation, Campbell and a friend boarded the Seaboard train in nearby Greenville, S.C., to visit graduate schools along the East Coast. He settled on the sociology program at the University of Pennsylvania, where he received his master?s degree.

Campbell began his teaching career at Berea College in Kentucky, then took a position at Mississippi Southern where he met Berdelle Taylor, whom he married in 1949. After teaching at the College of Wooster in Ohio, Campbell earned his Ph.D. at Vanderbilt in 1956, then taught at Florida State before pursuing post-doctoral studies at Harvard and accepting a faculty position with the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Campbell returned to Vanderbilt in 1963 to chair of the Department of Sociology and Anthropology. ?He was a tour de force in sociology,? said Donato. ?He did some exceptional hiring while he was here and brought in major scholars. He set about putting Vanderbilt on the map in sociology for the next 50 years.?

With his characteristic humility, Campbell once said his policy was to ensure that ?every sociologist I brought here was a better sociologist than I was.?

During his tenure as Faculty Senate chair in 1972, Campbell advocated a larger faculty role in major university decisions and increased emphasis on graduate education in order for the university to become a truly elite research university. His remarks, reported in the Vanderbilt Gazette, were titled ?The Faculty Role in Locating the Future of the University.? He also encouraged faculty to become more strongly engaged in research and scholarly publications.

Then-Provost Nicholas Hobbs asked Campbell to serve as Graduate School dean, a post he assumed in 1973. Campbell set about increasing the Graduate School?s resources and improving diversity among the students admitted. An important mission for him was attracting qualified African American students who were graduates of historically black universities.

?He helped strengthen graduate education at Vanderbilt, and that?s an important role for any great?university?to?be able to contribute to the ranks of the national professoriate through its doctoral training programs,? said Dan Cornfield, a member of the sociology department since 1980. After stepping down as dean and returning to teaching in 1983, Campbell retired from Vanderbilt in 1993.

Sociology department colleagues who interviewed him extensively in the months before his death noted that his tenure as a scholar and university administrator came during a significant historical period.

?Ernest Campbell was part of the important generation of U.S. sociologists based in the South whose contributions to the development of modern sociology, and the study of group relations in particular, were directly related to the unfolding of the Civil Rights movement, especially in the South,? Cornfield said.??His career evolved at a time when his generation of sociologists was increasingly professionalizing the discipline and also contributing to the formation of critical social interventions to create a more integrated society.?

During Campbell?s Ph.D. studies at Vanderbilt, the school superintendent in Oak Ridge, Tenn., learned of his scholarly interest in education and race and asked Campbell to study the outcomes of desegregation in that city. This subject became Campbell?s dissertation topic.

In his post-doctoral year at Harvard, he examined community conflict about public health issues, especially as related to race. Campbell spent time exploring issues of desegregation in Little Rock, Ark., particularly the role of ministers in influencing community attitudes. That work led to a book called Christians in Racial Crisis, published in 1959. It was one of his many scholarly publications.

While at UNC, the Campbells welcomed the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. to their home when the civil rights leader visited Chapel Hill. Campbell studied the educational aspirations of white and black students in North Carolina in the early 1960s and received a call from the U.S. Office of Education asking him to serve as co-director of a project resulting from a mandate in the U.S. Civil Rights Act of 1964 to study the effects of discrimination on race, sex and religion.

The scholars focused on education achievement and race, and the resulting large-scale study of nearly 800,000 students documented huge differences in test scores and achievement by race. The research additionally documented that the Southern region lagged significantly behind the rest of the nation in terms of education, especially in regard to race. The resulting study was dubbed the ?Coleman Report? after its principal author, James S. Coleman, and was published in 1966.

?We were able to demonstrate that black students who were in class with whites were doing significantly better than other black students,? Campbell said. ?It wasn?t our job to say what this means. Other people grabbed it and that became the argument for busing.?

In a 1975 Tennessean article, Campbell said that busing as a policy had misfired. ?The goals sought by large-scale busing are highly desirable, but the negative consequences of busing are larger than we thought,? he said at the time.

Campbell advocated efforts to increase contact among diverse groups in schools, institutions and neighborhoods. ?In my view,? he told the newspaper, ?it is very much in the national interest to preserve racial contact and prevent racial isolation and separation in public institutions.?

In later years, Campbell expanded his academic attention to the study of attitudes and predictors of alcohol use among students, especially in the transitional years between high school and college.

One of the pivotal experiences of his personal and professional life came in 1968 when the Rockefeller Foundation invited Campbell to travel to what was then the University of East Africa in Nairobi, Kenya, as a visiting chair in sociology. He was impressed by the university?s accomplishments, despite limited resources, and by the seriousness and professionalism of his colleagues and students there. He wrote an article in Vanderbilt Alumnus magazine in which he recounted his experiences and called for greater involvement in Africa by the university.

Campbell was involved in numerous professional organizations. He was president of the Southern Sociological Society at the time of King?s assassination, rearranging the group?s agenda in response to King?s death. He also served as president of the Association of Graduate School Deans and served on the Council of the American Sociological Association. His on-campus leadership extended to membership on the University Research Council.

In retirement, Campbell remained active in social, political and environmental causes, and as an avid tennis player. The Campbells were among the first preservationist pioneers to restore a 19th-century home in historic Germantown, where, as master gardeners, they also transformed a barren downtown lot into a garden that remains an oasis for the community.

Campbell is survived by his wife, Berdelle, and their four children, John, Paul, Leigh and Scott, and seven grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Cumberland River Compact?or the Nashville Jazz Workshop.

5 ? Willie Cauley-Stei

Snowden leaves neutral confines of Moscow airport, enters Russia

Edward Snowden has finally escaped his month-long Moscow airport purgatory and arrived in Russian territory, according to the Associated Press. The NSA whistleblower had already been granted temporary asylum by the Putin-led government after Bolivia and Venezuela also offered to take the fugitive, and was awaiting paperwork in order to leave Sheremetyevo Airport. The NSA's arch-enemy will granted a year's stay, according to his Russian lawyer, and will be able to re-apply to remain after that. Now that his Russian residency has been established, most press outlets expect a strong reaction from the US government after it assured Moscow that Snowden wouldn't face the death penalty if deported. For its part, Russia said it has no intention of handing over the man who blew the lid off the pervasive PRISM monitoring program.

Twitter account of Thomson Reuters hacked by Syrian activists

Twitter

One of the images tweeted from the @ThomsonReuters account by the Syrian Electronic Army.

The group of hackers calling itself the Syrian Electronic Army appears to have compromised the official Twitter account of business news agency Thomson Reuters, posting a series of political cartoons depicting the ongoing civil war in Syria.

@ThomsonReuters began tweeting the hacked content at 6:33PM ET, posting seven pictures over a period of about 35 minutes. The content remained up for over an hour; the account was suspended at about 7:45PM ET. Other aspects of Thomson Reuters and the Reuters news agency, such as the websites or other Twitter accounts, were unaffected.

The Syrian Electronic Army has claimed responsibility for a number of hacks, mainly Twitter accounts of press agencies. The Financial Times, Daily Telegraph, and Associated Press all had their accounts hijacked and fake or Syrian nationalist content posted.

Syria's state-controlled Internet service provider pulled the plug on the SEA's operations in May, and little has been heard from the group since then, at least until today.

Thomson Reuters offered the following statement to NBC News regarding the hack:

Yesterday evening the @thomsonreuters Twitter account was hacked. In this time, unauthorized individuals posted fabricated tweets of which Thomson Reuters was not the source. The account has been secured and restored.

New Android phones you should know about

Unless you stay glued to the latest smartphone news, it can sometimes be difficult to keep up with all of the Android phones that have been announced and released recently. As we enter the fall season we?ll see some new gear from Apple, but until then we can take a look at some new Android phones on the market today.

The thing that is both cool (and occasionally frustrating) about Android phones is that they are made by such a wide group of manufacturers. This means that the companies are always sticking the latest and greatest in their phones, but it also means that they need to do some clever things with software in order to compete with other phones being released using the same OS. As a result, each manufacturer has their own unique set of features that they use to sell their products. This is cool if you love playing with all the new Android phones that seem to come out every week, but it can make choosing a new smartphone complicated.

This guide will help you tell these shiny new Android phones apart, and choose for yourself which is the right choice.

Droid Feature

Motorola Droid Mini, Droid Ultra, and Droid Maxx

As the first carrier to try an exclusive branding for certain Android phones (and the only carrier who still thinks it is a good idea), Verizon Wireless and its Droid line have made a permanent mark on the Android ecosystem. Phones that bear the Droid branding are Verizon exclusives, and come with a unique set of wallpapers, notification, and ringtones? and typically a healthy dose of bloatware courtesy of Big Red. Motorola has now made a permanent arrangement with VZW so that all future Droid phones will be made with the big M on the back. The most recent release was not one but three Android phones, each with their own unique form factor and feature set.

Motorola?s three Droid phones are all alike on the inside, but their outsides are build for three very different kinds of users. The 4.3-inch Droid Mini is built to serve the user who wants a smaller profile phone that still has higher end specs. The Droid Ultra is the next phone in a long line to claim their chassis is the thinnest in the land, while sporting a 5-inch screen and a 10MP camera. The Droid Maxx is the workhorse of the family, with a massive 3500mAh battery that promises 48 hours of battery life. Each of these phones is packing the Motorola X8 computing system, with a kevlar unibody design and a water repellant nano-coating.

The interesting thing about the new Droid line is that they intentionally try not to compete in raw specs. They claim a superior feature set and user experience and claim that their dual core chipset is just as capable as the quad core seen in flagships like the HTC One and Samsung Galaxy S4. Verizon has been sure to give the new Droid line plenty of space in their stores and plenty of coverage in their advertisements, but it is still too early to tell just how successful this line of phones will be.

HTC one mini side-by-side

HTC One Mini

Joining in the increasingly popular opinion that 4.3-inches for a phone is ?mini? despite being slightly larger than the iPhone 5 is HTC with the shrunken variant to the very popular One phone. The HTC One Mini is not going to win anyone over on raw horsepower, but the comfortable unibody design for the One feels just as comfortable in the hand when shrunken down a bit.

If you subtract the IR port from the power button, the NFC panel from the back, and the image stabilizer from the Ultrapixel camera from the HTC One proper, you?ve got a pretty good idea of what you?re going to get from the Mini variant. The power for HTC?s latest phones comes from the combination of comfortable to hold hardware and a completely unique take on Android. The same version of Android with HTC Sense can be found on the One Mini, delivering Blinkfeed and BeatsAudio optimizations to enhance the mobile experience.

It?s pretty clear that HTC?s hardware and software optimizations are here to stay, and if you?re a fan of the One but wish it were a tiny bit smaller you may find yourself quite happy with the One Mini.

Houston?s Oil States International, an energy services firm, said Tuesday it will spin off its housing business, creating two standalone companies.

Who Does The Commercial Real Estate Heavy Lifting? Duke Long ...

origin_142541094

As a continuation of my posts Is Almost Every Building In The World Always For Rent Or For Sale and Self Serve Commercial Real Estate. This Cannot Be Happening?let?s take a peek at the commercial real estate client of today.

Information Overload?

That?s all we hear from every possible media source. There has got to be information overload. Individuals now have access to more information than ever and the only way to cope is to back away from that information. Walk away and detox reduce your stress levels. Seek the simple things in life. Work and life balance. Blah Blah Blah.

Commercial real estate clients today are not information overloaded in my opinion ?if anything they lack commercial real estate information. They do not have enough and will seek out any informational venue they see necessary to get that information. At this point that information sits where? Not with the brokers that is one thing for sure. Most likely it sits partially with the building owners but the best sources of information about commercial real estate are easily outside sources. Simple example: (GIS)?Geographic Information System.??Other examples: Public records, architectural data, construction management, facilities management, BIM and on and on and on.

The Heavy Lifting.

Commercial real estate clients are doing the data research on a potential lease or purchase long before they ever think about contacting a broker. Don?t think so? How much time did you spend online researching let?s say you last phone purchase? Wait, really you just walked into the phone store said hello to the pimple faced kid behind the counter and said ? just pick me out one that you think might work for a couple of years.? ?? Five hundred and sixty dollars sounds good to me and no I don?t care about a maintenance program.? ? Just hit my card and put the phone in a bag, I will figure out how to work the thing later.? How about your last computer purchase? Take even less time or effort on that one?

So someone potentially making a long-term huge decision for their company is just going to call up a broker out of the blue and say ? hey we may be in the market what have you got that may work?? ? Just email me some flyers that should be all I need.? Ok alright I know it?s not that way really or in the delusional minds of some that?s the way they still hope it is. Let me restate this again.

Clients have already evaluated the building.

Clients have already evaluated the broker.

Clients have already evaluated the building owner.

Clients have already evaluated the tenants.

Clients have already evaluated the entire deal.

Clients have their own database.

Clients have always been connected to commercial real estate.

Clients have no need for face to face they don?t want face to face.

Clients have their own transaction management.

Clients have no need for white papers.

Clients have no need for consultative selling.

Clients have no need for relationship building.

Clients have already downloaded the information.

Clients have no idea what transactional means and could care less.

Clients have made your phone go quiet for a reason.

Let?s continue on??

Clients will only call you after they have done at least 60-70 % of the research.

Clients will most likely call you for information as a last resort.

Clients will only contact you when they think you are the only human that can answer their question.

Clients have changed the sales process.

Clients have change your role as a sales person.

Clients only need you for specific commercial real estate tasks.

You New Client.

Is You.

You already search research download transact connect and evaluate the exact same way your commercial real estate client does.

Bombs kill 15 in Nigeria's Kano: Police

KANO, Nigeria (Reuters) - Multiple bomb blasts in Nigeria's biggest northern city of Kano killed 15 people on Monday, a senior policeman said, in an area previously targeted by militant Islamist group Boko Haram.

Several witnesses said they saw dead bodies after hearing multiple blasts at around 9:30 p.m. (2030 GMT) in the Sabon Gari district, a predominantly Christian area dominated by ethnic Igbos from the southeast.

"In all bomb attacks 15 were killed," the policeman in Kano told Reuters, asking not to be named.

Military spokesman Ikedichi Iweha confirmed there had been a bomb explosion but gave no further details.

"I heard two explode around Enugu Road and another two near Forest Villa Hotel," said local trader Emeka Mike. "After the blasts I saw many bodies lying on the ground."

The military did not say who was suspected of carrying out the bombings, but Boko Haram killed at least 25 people in multiple bomb blasts in Sabon Gari in March.

A concerted military crackdown in Boko Haram's northeast stronghold since mid-May has weakened a 4-year-old insurgency, which is fighting to carve an Islamic state out of religiously mixed Nigeria.

But it has also pushed the militants into hiding and security sources had feared attacks could spread to other areas of northern Nigeria like Kano or to neighbouring countries.

Militants have also shifted their focus away from security forces onto civilian targets, killing children in at least four school attacks over the past month and killing 20 civilians in an attack on a remote northeast village last weekend. Oppo confirms new N-Lens series to challenge Samsung's Galaxy Camera

Oppo confirms new NLens series to challenge Samsung's Galaxy Camera

We were a bit skeptical when Android Authority claimed earlier this month that Oppo's developing a camera-centric device, but as it turns out, this is really happening! Today, a company representative confirmed to us the name of Oppo's new product line: N-Lens. The focus here will obviously be on photography, and it'll apparently be the "most important flagship series for Oppo going forward." Luckily, the cellular part is here to stay, so these N-Lens cameras -- likely powered by Android -- will be connected; but we're not sure whether you can also make phone calls with them.

No further details were provided (especially not a release date), but Android Authority's scoop already gives a rough idea on what to expect: a high-resolution camera with great low-light performance. You can also just about see the above slide referring to the "Samsung Galaxy Camera" (which has since been superseded by the Galaxy S4 Zoom), so Oppo seems keen to ride on this wave started by the Korean giant. If you want, it's a bit like how the Chinese company spotted the upward trend in local girls taking selfies early on, which led to the Ulike 2 with its 5-megapixel front-facing camera. But of course, with the arrival of Nokia's Lumia 1020, it's not going to be an easy fight.

Scuffles erupt over Taiwan-China trade pact

Dozens of Taiwanese scuffled with police Wednesday in the rowdiest demonstration yet against a new trade agreement with China.

Signed on June 21, the pact allows each side to invest in the other's service sectors, including banking. Its approval by Taiwan's legislature is considered to be a foregone conclusion because President Ma Ying-jeou's Nationalist Party enjoys a substantial majority in the 113-member body.

During the fracas outside the island's legislature, some of the demonstrators breached a police line and climbed over the fence of the legislative building. They briefly protest inside the compound before being dispersed. No arrests were reported.

The pact is the latest in a series of China trade agreements promoted by Ma. The Taiwanese leader believes that unless Taiwan tightens its economic links with the mainland, the island's standard of living will suffer, particularly as neighboring Asian countries pursue their own commercial preferential arrangements with Beijing.

The demonstrators reject this, insisting that the pact will increase Taiwan's already considerable dependence on the mainland and enable China to dictate political conditions to the point where Taiwan's hard-won democratic freedoms will eventually be imperiled.

Taiwan and the mainland split amid civil war in 1949. Beijing considers the island of 23 million people to be part of its territory and says it will bring it back into the fold, by persuasion if possible, by force if necessary.

Habitele: Mobile technologies reshaping urban life

CALL FOR PAPERS in a critical perspective on urban studies
ISSN 2175-3369 www.pucpr.br/urbe
Guest-editor: Professor Dominique Boullier (Sciences Po, Universit? de Paris)

Habitele? is a theoretical framework proposed by Dominique Boullier, from SciencesPo, for understanding the major role of mobile technologies as new skins/envelops (after habit, habitat and habitacle), that allow shifts from one identity or affiliation to another. People used to control their personal world through devices that they always want to keep close to their body (keys, credit card, money, IDs and so on). Most of these devices allow people to interact among themselves and with the urban environment.

Now mobile technologies are aggregating all these traces of affiliations to various worlds and making the shift between these worlds very fluid. Related concepts, capturing some aspects of Habitele, have been discussed by Julie Cohen?s personal data ecosystem, Alessandro Aurigi and Fiorella De Cindio?s augmented spaces and Rodrigo Firmino and F?bio Duarte?s infiltrated technologies.

One of the questions proposed by Boullier is: Is Habitele creating a new kind of envelope as do ?habit? or ?habitat?? Or, in other words and considering the city as a technological artifact: Is Habitele reshaping the way people interact, through mobile technologies, with an urban environment increasingly infiltrated with a myriad of information technologies?
We invite you to address the challenges of constructing and living in an urban environment mediated by mobile technologies.

Habitele: digital wereable identities, was also a research project leaded by Dominique Boullier, funded by the French National Research Agency (ANR), which involved teams from 8 countries investigating how people interact with mobile phones as part of their personal interface to different layers of social worlds and urban environments.

Along with Miss America, parade returns to NJ

The Miss America parade is getting a television-friendly makeover as the tradition returns to Atlantic City in September for the first time in nine years.

The Sept. 14 parade will be televised live for the first time, Miss America Organization CEO Sam Haskell told The Associated Press on Monday. It's scheduled to air live on WPVI-TV, the ABC affiliate in Philadelphia, and again the next day as part of the lead-in for the Sept. 15 pageant finals, which will be shown on ABC nationally.

"We're supersizing the parade," Haskell said. "We're supersizing the telecast."

Some local groups have complained about the cost of getting a float in the parade this year ? at least $2,000 compared with $200 in 2004, the last time it was held.

Haskell said higher fees will help pay for a more spectacular event designed to show off Atlantic City.

The parade on the boardwalk harks back to the roots of Miss America, when the pageant launched in 1921 as a way to drum up business for the shore resort after Labor Day.

The pageant is getting reacquainted with fans shouting "Show us your shoes!" to the contestants in convertibles, among other traditions, when it comes back to Atlantic City.

It's not clear exactly how long parade-goers have been shouting to the women. But Haskell said that since at least the early 1990s, the women have elaborately decorated their shoes ? Miss Maine's have often had lobsters on theirs, and you can count on Miss Texas wearing cowboy boots ? and obliging by displaying them proudly.

Miss America left its hometown for Las Vegas after 2004 and except for one year when there was a walking parade there, the show-us-your-shoes tradition disappeared.

Producer John Best, who puts on eight parades annually, including the National Independence Day Parade in Washington, was hired to run this year's edition.

Best said the route will run along the familiar boardwalk, but now starting at Revel Casino-Hotel, a shimmering glass structure that wasn't yet built the last time Miss America was in town.

He said the 4,000 participants will include two youth choirs; convertibles carrying the contestants; 15 elaborate floats, including one featuring veterans back from Iraq and Afghanistan; dancers and a performance area for TV purposes. Local Girl Scout troops and Red Cross chapters will be represented.

The first of the 22 marching bands will be ? as it has long been ? the one from Atlantic City High School.

But Best said another one will be an all-star marching band from high schools around Atlantic County. That's an element he said he hopes to become a tradition.
