You've probably heard of peanut or shellfish allergies. But a meat allergy? Not as common. Even weirder is what might be causing it?tick bites, according to a study in the Journal of General Internal Medicine. [Susan E. Wolver et al., A Peculiar Cause of Anaphylaxis: No More Steak?]

A few years back, folks started showing up in emergency rooms in the southeast U.S. with hives, swelling or worse?anaphylaxis?after eating red meat. For this study, researchers looked at three of those cases. And they found that tick bites, specifically those of the Lone Star tick, seem to be the cause.

The bitten victim?s immune system appears to become sensitized to a substance called alpha-gal. And whereas all the major food allergies are triggered by proteins, the culprit here?alpha-gal?is a carbohydrate.

Alpha-gal is found in the meat and fat of hooved mammals, like cows, sheep or pigs. So eating a burger can expose you to alpha-gal, which activates antibodies and leads to the release of histamines.

Researchers say something similar to alpha-gal in the tick saliva may set off the immune system?which then goes after the alpha-gal in meat. And leaves a steak lover ticked off.

Orphan Drug Status Granted for SNS01-T for Mantle Cell Lymphoma ...

Senesco Technologies reported that the FDA has granted orphan-drug designation for the company's lead drug candidate SNS01-T for treatment of both mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) and diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL).

Bahrain opens probes into police abuse allegations

MANAMA, Bahrain (AP) ? Bahrain's Interior Ministry says it is opening investigations into possible rights violations by police during crackdowns on opposition protesters.

The probes into possible police abuses are in line with recommendations last year by an independent commission that studied the Gulf nation's Shiite majority's uprising against the Sunni monarchy.

A statement Sunday says the Interior Ministry seeks to uphold "international standards" among its security forces in efforts to build trust after more than 17 months of protests and clashes.

Bahrain has said before that it will look into abuses but this is one of the most forcefully worded pledges.

More than 50 people have died in unrest since February 2011 in the strategic kingdom, which is home to the U.S. Navy's 5th Fleet.

Clauer selected as media teaching specialist | ABC Newspapers

A longtime media specialist in Anoka-Hennepin, including the past 18 years at Jackson Middle School (JMS), Lee Anne Clauer has been selected as the new Media Services Teaching and Learning Specialist (TALS).

A graduate of Anoka High School, Clauer began her career in education as a special education teacher.

After teaching at Northdale Middle School and Washington, Sorteberg and Madison elementary schools, Clauer returned to St. Cloud State University, where she received her bachelor?s degree and earned a master?s degree in informational media.

?I took a television production class because I was very interested in television,? Clauer said.

?I was interested in audio and video, then computers and library information. One thing led to another and I got a degree in it.?

After switching tracks, Clauer worked at Champlin, Hamilton and Hoover elementary schools before her experience at JMS.

During her time at JMS, Clauer was involved with numerous district committees and pilot projects related to library media centers and instructional technology use.

?I think it?s very interesting to provide students with technology and information tools to help them be successful learners,? Clauer said. ?It?s fun to get them excited about learning.?

Clauer chose to apply for her new position because she said it was a wonderful opportunity to take what she had learned at the building level and move it the district level.

In addition to knowing many of the district?s media specialists, Clauer appreciates the technology facilitators she has worked with at JMS and looks forward to providing technology services on a larger scale.

During her time at JMS, Clauer was able to have the school?s media center open before and after school. Not only did students utilize the resources, but teachers, knowing students had access to computers, were able to create technology infused projects.

?A technology-rich school, JMS always invested in hardware and was able to stay ahead of the curve,? Clauer said.

?The media and technology departments worked well together. I am hoping to replicate that at the district level.?

In addition to supporting technology initiatives, Clauer will focus on student learning, provide students with access to quality information, develop partnerships with curriculum and tech facilitators and customize teaching and learning.

Clauer will also support district literacy initiatives.

?Children who use libraries for pleasure reading and seeking information tend to be more successful outside of school,? Clauer said. ?It?s important to read to succeed.?

Most Prostate Cancer Patients Don't Die From the Disease: Study

FRIDAY, July 27 (HealthDay News) -- Men with prostate cancer are more likely to die from other conditions, such as heart disease, than from their cancer, a new study finds.

Living a healthy lifestyle that helps prevent chronic diseases can prolong life even among men with prostate cancer, the researchers added.

"Our study is the first to analyze specific causes of death among men with prostate cancer," said lead researcher Mara Epstein, a postdoctoral researcher at the Harvard School of Public Health in Boston.

Most men who died from prostate cancer over several decades of the study were men diagnosed when they were older or diagnosed before the advent of screening for prostate-specific antigen (PSA), she noted.

"We hope the study will have an impact on the clinical management of men who receive a diagnosis of prostate cancer," Epstein said.

"We hope it will encourage physicians to use the diagnosis as a teachable moment to encourage men to modify lifestyle factors, like losing weight, increasing physical activity and stopping smoking," she explained. "We believe that adopting a healthier lifestyle may reduce a man's risk of other chronic medical conditions that ultimately account for more deaths among men with prostate cancer than the disease itself."

The report was published July 25 in the online edition of the Journal of the National Cancer Institute.

For the study, Epstein's team used the U.S. Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results Program and the Swedish Cancer and Cause of Death registries to collected data on the causes of death among more than 700,000 men.

U.S. deaths were for 1973 through 2008; for Swedish men it was 1961 through 2008, the team noted.

Over these periods, 52 percent of the Swedish men with prostate cancer died, as did 30 percent of American men with prostate cancer in the study.

Of these deaths, however, only 35 percent of the Swedish men died directly from prostate cancer and only 16 percent of American men died from the disease itself, the investigators found.

In addition, as the study continued, fewer men died from prostate cancer while deaths from heart disease remained the same.

By the last five years of the study, 29 percent of Swedish men with prostate cancer died from it as did 11 percent of American men, the researchers calculated.

Deaths from prostate cancer varied by age and year of diagnosis. The most deaths were among older men and among men diagnosed before screening for PSA began, they added.

With PSA screening, prostate cancer was diagnosed early and more low-risk cancers were identified, the researchers explained.

Dr. Durado Brooks, director of prostate and colon cancer at the American Cancer Society, said that "this is a lot of reinforcement for a lot of information we already know about. Many more men die with prostate cancer than from prostate cancer."

Brooks added that "prostate cancer is largely a disease of older men, and many of the men who are diagnosed have other medical problems that end up killing them."

Most prostate cancers are slow-growing, and therefore not lethal. In a recent study it was reported that only about 10 percent of men die from prostate cancer whether they receive treatment or not, he noted.

For Brooks, these findings argue against PSA screening, which too often "leads down the path of unnecessary treatment."

"Men should understand that not every prostate cancer needs to be found and every prostate cancer that's found does not necessarily need to be treated," he said.

Another expert, Dr. Louis Kavoussi, chairman of urology at North Shore-LIJ Health System, The Arthur Smith Institute for Urology in Lake Success, N.Y., added that "prostate cancer does kill and if you pick it up early, it can be treated."

The problem with PSA screening is that too many men are treated when they don't have to be, he said. "It's not bad to detect prostate cancer. The bad thing is that you treat everybody," Kavoussi suggested.

"We need to become smarter about who actually needs to be treated and when people need to be treated," he added.

Many men don't need to be screened, Kavoussi said. Those who should be screened are men with a family history of prostate cancer, blacks and anyone else at high risk, he noted.

Until now it was thought that fin whales in the Strait of Gibraltar and the Alboran Sea made up part of the distribution of this species of whale in the Mediterranean. However, an international team of scientists led by a Spaniard has revealed that their population has been overestimated by including specimens from the Atlantic that visit at certain times the western Mediterranean, where the noise generated by human activity affects their survival.

In 1991 the fin whale (Balaenoptera physalus) population in the Mediterranean Sea was estimated at 3500 specimens. A new study, published in Marine Mammal Science, now shows that this record included specimens from the Atlantic, and suggests that the distribution and size of the current population of this whale, which is threatened with extinction, should be reconsidered.

"The Mediterranean population has easily been overestimated, as the census included the whole of the southeast Mediterranean, incorporating Atlantic fin whales within the Mediterranean census", reported Manuel Castellote, the lead author of the study and researcher in the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOOA), Seattle (USA).

The research team analysed 29,822 hours of recordings of the songs emitted by these marine mammals ?which can reach a length of 27 metres, and are the second biggest cetaceans in the world? in order to identify the distribution limits of the Mediterranean fin whale and those of the north Atlantic fin whale in the Straits of Gibraltar, where the two populations overlap.

The results reveal that the presence of fin whales in the areas of the Straits of Gibraltar and the Alboran Sea ?southwest of the Mediterranean? is exclusively limited to Atlantic fin whales that visit the Mediterranean Sea, above all in autumn and spring.

As a consequence, "the population of Mediterranean fin whales presents a much more limited distribution than currently described, excluding a significant region of the western Mediterranean", confirms Castellote, who highlights the fact that this region had previously been identified as a feeding area.

The importance of the study is the critical state situation of the whale in these waters where it is the only mysticete (it has a baleen instead of teeth). The species is particularly susceptible to collisions with merchant vessels and ferries, which is the main cause of fin whale mortality.

Among other threats, an "insufficient" knowledge of their basic ecological characteristics such as distribution and population size stands out. For the biologist, "from a conservation point of view, it is essential to understand the geographical distribution and population size of the Mediterranean fin whale, because if not, appropriate management methods cannot be implemented".

The danger of undersea noise

Maritime traffic and geophysical exploration ?including the search for hydrocarbons? "drastically" reduces the song effectiveness ?linked to reproduction and which propagates hundreds of kilometres beneath the Sea? of the whales, which are also the group of marine mammals with the greatest acoustic sensitivity at low frequencies. "The noise generated through human activity in the oceans leads to possible chronic effects on the health of this species", Castellote states.

To control these threats the same researchers identified in another report the possible impact of noise generated by human activity on the acoustic behaviour and geographical movement of the fin whales in various regions of the Mediterranean Sea and in the northeast Atlantic.

After analysing 20,547 hours of recordings of the sounds emitted by the whales, the study published in Biological Conservationindicated that the whales modified the characteristics of their songs in order to try to reduce the impact of noise on their propagation.

In addition the researchers recorded a massive displacement of fin whales, triggered by the noise from geophysical prospecting at a distance of 285 km from the study area. "These recurrent displacements, together with the changes in acoustic behaviour, could increase the energy expenditure and reduce the reproductive success of whales affected by the noise", the expert indicated.

In the long-term the consequences for these mammals are clear: chronic effects which impact on their survival emerge. "Noise in the marine medium, despite being recognised as a significant pollutant, is far from being controlled and regulated within the waters of the Exclusive Economic Zone of Spain", warns Castellote.

The organization was founded in 2002 by Dr. James Oleske, the infectious disease specialist internationally known for his work with pediatric AIDS, Lynn Czarniecki, an advanced practiced nurse, Godin Millison and other committed individuals who recognized the need to ease the suffering of children with life-limiting medical conditions in a way that did not exist.

?We do not want any child to endure unnecessary suffering, and we work to maintain quality of life for as long as possible. We also believe we must support families through their child?s death, if that happens, and the ensuing bereavement process,? said Dr. Oleske.

Nurses from the program visit families in hospitals as well as in their homes, where they work to ease pain, reduce unnecessary trips to the hospital, and help families make end-of-life decisions during extremely stressful and confusing times. Many of the families come from poor and underserved communities.

The center has helped more than 580 children, including children with rare genetic disorders and serious and rare forms of pediatric cancer. They also have supported families of newborns with serious disorders who wanted to take their babies home, where they died surrounded by family instead of in a hospital. More recently, the center has also been called to work with children who have been victims of violence. The center?s physicians and nurses help parents understand their child?s medical condition and prognosis and facilitate communicate with other health care professionals.

Sports guidelines for long QT syndrome patients may be too strict, experts say

ScienceDaily (July 25, 2012) ? Participation in competitive sports by people with long QT syndrome -- a genetic abnormality in the heart's electrical system -- has been a matter of debate among physicians. Current guidelines disqualify most LQTS patients from almost every sport. In a first-of-its-kind study, Mayo Clinic's LQTS Clinic recently examined its own experience, determining the outcome of LQTS patients who chose to remain athletes against guideline recommendations. The study is published online in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

In the study, the records of 353 LQTS patients ages 6 to 40 who were evaluated at Mayo Clinic between July 2000 and November 2010 were reviewed to determine which patients chose to continue athletic participation after LQTS diagnosis and LQTS-related events.

Of the 157 patients who were athletes at the time of their evaluation, 27 (17 percent) chose to disqualify themselves, "debunking the myth" that families would never choose to quit sports, says senior author Michael Ackerman, M.D., Ph.D., pediatric cardiologist and Director of Mayo's LQTS Clinic. More importantly, of the 130 patients who chose to remain an athlete, only one experienced a LQTS-triggered event during a sport; the athlete received an appropriate shock from his implantable cardioverter-defibrillator on two separate occasions. For the study, researchers defined a competitive athlete as a person who participated in organized competitive sports at the little league, middle or high school, collegiate or professional level.

"About eight years ago after I started to see some of these lives ruined by the recommendation to discontinue sports, we decided to challenge the status quo," Dr. Ackerman says. "We adopted a philosophy that empowered patients and their families with the right to make an informed and difficult decision about continuing in competitive sports, a possible LQTS risk-taking behavior."

Dr. Ackerman presented these findings recentlly in Glasgow, Scotland, at a pre-2012 Summer Olympics medical conference on sports, athletes and health. Olympic swimmer Dana Vollmer as a child was found to have signs of LQTS; her mother carried a portable defibrillator to her swim meets, but by college, Vollmer no longer showed symptoms, according to her official website. Vollmer, who is not a Mayo patient, will compete in London.

In LQTS, which affects one in 2,000 people, the rapid heartbeats can trigger a sudden fainting spell, seizure or sudden death. Treatment can involve medication, medical devices or surgery.

"We felt that although exercise, sports, and the thrill of victory and agony of defeat could potentially trigger a dangerous heart rhythm in these patients, that in a well-counseled, well-studied and well-treated patient, these may be manageable risks," Dr. Ackerman says. "Up until now, the current status quo has been to view these things as controllable risk factors which are controlled by kicking these patients out of most sports and telling them to not get their heart rate up and not get too excited."

Two sets of guidelines have medical eligibility criteria for patients with cardiovascular abnormalities: the 36th Bethesda Conference guidelines and the European Society of Cardiology guidelines. The ESC guidelines are more restrictive, Dr. Ackerman says. Both sets of guidelines are based on expert opinions and rely on the "art of medicine" because there is little evidence about the real risk of sports participation, he says.

As patients in Mayo Clinic's LQTS Clinic, all 353 initially evaluated for this study received a comprehensive two- to three-day clinical and genetic evaluation, including a one- to two-hour consultation with Dr. Ackerman, all of which is standard for LQTS Mayo patients.

Patients who were already athletes and chose to continue athletics received counseling on athletic participation guidelines. If the patient chose to continue competitive athletics, the decision had to be agreed on by the physician, the patient, and both parents, depending on the patient's age. In addition to the patient's treatment, such as medications, each athlete obtained an automated external defibrillator, and the athlete's school officials and coaches were notified.

Of the 130 patients who remained athletes, 20 had ICDs. Forty-nine (38 percent) participated in more than one sport. Thirty-two athletes competed in high school, and eight competed at the college, university or professional level.

The results suggest that the Bethesda and ESC guidelines may be excessively restrictive, Dr. Ackerman says. But he cautions that LQTS patients who want to remain athletes should seek treatment at a center of excellence. "The patient must be evaluated, risk-stratified, treated, and counseled carefully so that the athletes and their families can make an informed decision," he says.

Jonathan Johnson, M.D., is the first author of the study. Dr. Ackerman is the Windland Smith Rice Cardiovascular Genomics Research Professor at Mayo Clinic. The research was funded by the Mayo Clinic Windland Smith Rice Comprehensive Sudden Cardiac Death Program.

This is a look at institutions that removed Paterno's name or imagery after Sandusky's arrest.

BIG TEN

A year before the conference got its 12th team (Penn State was No. 11), the league came out with a raft of trophies that appeared to be named by committee. For the upcoming championship game, the prize was to be the Stagg-Paterno Trophy, named for former University of Chicago coach Amos Alonso Stagg and Penn State's legend. Less than a week after Paterno was fired by the university, the Big Ten announced that it was taking Paterno's name off the trophy, which had yet to be awarded. Wisconsin beat Michigan State to become the first team to win the Stagg Championship Trophy.

NIKE

At Paterno's memorial service in January, Nike founder and CEO Phil Knight won a thunderous standing ovation when he said: "If there is a villain in this tragedy, it lies in that investigation and not in Joe Paterno's response." Then the Freeh Report found that Paterno helped hush up allegations of child sex abuse against Sandusky for more than a decade. That same day, Knight said he had been wrong, and Nike's president took the name off the Joe Paterno Child Development Center at Nike headquarters in Oregon.

NITTANYVILLE (FORMERLY PATERNOVILLE)

For years, the area of tents where Penn State students camped outside Beaver Stadium for prime seats was called Paternoville, in a nod to a similar phenomenon at Duke named Krzyzewskiville for the Blue Devils' basketball coach. THE STATUE

As soon as Sandusky was charged and it was known that Paterno had failed to do anything more than report an incident to his superiors, questions about the fate of the statue of Paterno outside Beaver Stadium began. By the time the Freeh Report came out, it already seemed as if the statue with the words "Educator, Coach, Humanitarian" might not stay in place. Sure enough, early Sunday morning, crews erected a screen and took the statue down behind it. On Tuesday, the wall behind the statue came down, too.

BROWN

Brown University, the late coach's alma mater, said that it's reviewing whether to remove Paterno from the school's athletic hall of fame, too. Paterno, a member of the Ivy League school's class of 1950, was inducted into the hall in 1977. Brown already took his name off an award given annually to the school's top male freshman athlete.

STATE COLLEGE MURAL (HALO ONLY)

A mural titled "Inspiration" including Paterno and Sandusky and other members of the State College community was painted near campus 12 years ago. After Sandusky was charged, his likeness was painted over. After Paterno died, artist Michael Pilato added a halo, to signify his death, not his holiness. After the release of the Freeh Report, he painted over the halo. He added a large blue ribbon, instead, on Paterno's lapel symbolizing support for child abuse victims. Sandusky has been convicted and is awaiting sentencing.

CONNECTICUT MIDDLE SCHOOL MURAL

State College didn't have a monopoly on Paterno murals. Great Oak Middle School in Oxford, Conn., has a series of them, depicting admirable historic figures. They're going to paint over the portion that depicts Paterno, the Hartford Courant's website reported.

NCAA

As part of the NCAA's sanctions handed down on Monday, 112 Penn State wins were vacated. Paterno was credited with 111 of those, and reached the Division I record of 409 last Oct. 29 with a win over Illinois. Late the following week, Sandusky was charged, and Paterno was fired in the aftermath.

On Monday, all those wins were erased, along with Paterno's name atop the record books. Officially, he now has 298 victories and former Florida State coach Bobby Bowden holds the top spot in the NCAA record book with 377 major-college wins. Eddie Robinson, who led Grambling to 408 victories, regained the Division I mark.

The NCAA also took back the Gerald Ford Award it gave to Paterno in January 2011. The honor is for someone who has been a lifelong advocate of college athletics.

Northshore Utility, city of Kirkland to clean sewer pipes on Lake Washington shorelines

Properties along portions of the Lake Washington shoreline in Kirkland and Kenmore recently received notice from the city of Kirkland and Northshore Utility District (NUD) about the joint project to clean sewer pipes that serve homes and businesses.

Beginning today, city of Kirkland and NUD crews will begin to access manholes located in Lake Washington. Because access to the wastewater lake line is limited, a barge carrying equipment, including the city?s green educator truck, will be placed along the lake near affected properties. Kirkland properties south of Juanita Bay Park adjacent to 10th Street West and 14th Avenue West and south of Carillon Point adjacent to Lake Washington Boulevard from the 5200 block to approximately the 4400 block of Lake Washington Boulevard will be affected by the project.

Once Kirkland?s sewer lines are clean, the barge will continue to shoreline properties in Kenmore that are serviced by the NUD. The project is expected to be complete by July 26.

The sewer lake line was installed in 1961 and was recently inspected via robotic video cameras. Cleaning the sewer pipes will minimize the possibility of sewage backups and overflows and improve water quality.

An Equally Tragic Death in Chicago | DAWNING A NEW DAY

There is something obscene about a child dying before their parent. I cannot imagine the pain, the anguish of losing a child. America is in mourning because of the tragedy in Aurora, Colorado this past weekend. My heart hurts with all the families impacted by the actions of that mad man. There was an equally tragic death in Chicago this past weekend. But very few will hear about it. Very few will talk about it because it encroaches on the idol of abortion and the so -called woman?s right of choice that has captivated the nation since 1973.

Abortion, the most unregulated surgical procedure in the nation has claimed another life ? that of Tonya Reaves. Remember her name.? A young 24 year old daughter, sister, and mother, she is the latest victim to die at the hands of Planned Parenthood and their abortionists. For years organizations like Planned Parenthood and the National Abortion Federation have told us that ?abortion is one of the safest medical procedures provided in the United States and Canada today?. Really? I think Tonya?s family would beg to differ with that statement. Their daughter, sister, mother who left home on Friday to get that safe medical procedure, did not come back to her family and Instead she was transported to a local hospital where she died as a result of ?a hemorrhage, with a cervical dilation and evacuation, as well as an intrauterine pregnancy as contributing causes?.

What was Planned Parenthood at 18 S. Michigan Av in Chicago?s response? ?We were shocked and saddened upon learning of a tragic development at a nearby hospital? they said? as if the injury that sent her to that nearby hospital had no bearing on them and their facility.At a time when Planned Parenthood is working to convince the black community that black women are experiencing a lack of access to quality reproductive health care and therefore need more of their facilities in urban areas, I? find it particularly interesting that Planned Parenthood did not openly discuss this disparity in reproductive healthcare:? the numbers of young black women that have lost their lives at the hands of negligent abortionists. Nor do they discuss the numbers of young black women who have lost their fertility because of the ?safe? abortion in their reproductive health care dens. Most abortionists in America are not operating under reasonable standards of medical care for ambulatory medical centers.? Abortionists more times than we know, perforate the bowels or intestines of the woman as was the case when a teen was injured by Nicola Riley who Baltimore ruled a danger to society. They over medicate patients more than we know as was the case in Philadelphia when Karnamay Mongar? was given too much Demerol and died. Some do not have standard equipment to monitor the patient as was the case when Laura Hope Smith lost her life at the hands of Rapin Osathanondh, in Massachusetts. The failure to take a complete and accurate medical history is an issue in the case of a young woman from Johnson City, TN who had a late term abortion performed by Tyrone Malloy in Atlanta, GA and hemorrhaged to death. She had a history of sickle cell anemia, a factor that should have made her ineligible for the unmonitored abortion. These are but a few of the injuries that have occurred across the United States. Using 1999 data, the Guttmacher Institute (the research arm of Planned Parenthood), in their 2011 Facts on Induced Abortion in the United States tell us that ?The risk of abortion complications is minimal: Fewer than 0.3% of abortion patients experience a complication that requires hospitalization?.

First let us realize this is 1999 data and we are some thirteen years away from that study. But let us suppose this number is accurate. That translates into more than three thousand women each year that have been harmed at the abortionist hand. And we have no idea how many of them recovered from their injury. Some did not. Some were never able to have children because the damage was so great it result in a hysterectomy or permanent sterilization.Later in that same document, they provide information that I think the average woman does not know:? ?The risk of death associated with abortion increases with the length of pregnancy, from one death for every one million abortions at or before eight weeks to one per 29,000 at 16?20 weeks?and one per 11,000 at 21 or more weeks? and I doubt the abortionist informs her of this potentially life impacting fact before he does the procedure.

According to the Guttmacher about nineteen percent of the approximately 1.2 million abortions each year are performed on women who are sixteen or more weeks pregnant. Each year then we can expect seven to eight deaths of the mother.? I can only wonder if this information is shared with the mother before the procedure. Oh, I am sure they will pull out their consent forms and tell us they discussed it with the patient, because they will go to any length to cover up their negligence and lack of reasonable care. In reality we have no way of measuring the accuracy of Guttmacher?s numbers because the industry is unregulated and as such are not required to keep or share accurate records. I just finished reading The Scarlett Lady, Confessions of a Successful Abortionist by Carol Everett. She starts the book showcasing her facilities as the Neiman-Marcus of the industry. She ends the book describing the disgrace into which they had fallen ? actually performing the abortion procedure on women who were not pregnant. She goes on to describe a death and several botched abortions that were covered up and swept away by cooperating hospitals and doctors.

The patient in Chicago died on Friday. On Saturday we learned that an autopsy had already been completed and her death was ruled an accident. I can only pray that her family seeks a real autopsy that will reveal what I suspect is a lack of reasonable medical care on the part of Planned Parenthood. I pray for comfort for her family as they wrestle to reconcile what happened. I pray they will not be swayed by the dollars that Planned Parenthood may try to throw at them to make this go away. I pray justice will be had for Tonya so that no more of our daughters, sisters and mothers have to die on the altar of substandard medical practices most abortionists adhere to.? Let us join together and demand abortionists be held be held accountable when they take a life or reproductively maim another woman.

AURORA, Colo. (AP) ? Ashley Moser drifted in and out of consciousness in the ICU, a bullet lodged in her throat and a gunshot wound to her abdomen. In her waking moments, she called for her 6-year-old daughter Veronica.

Nobody had the heart to tell the 25-year-old mother that Veronica was already dead, the youngest victim killed at a Colorado movie theater in one of the worst mass shootings in U.S. history.

"All she's asking about, of course, is her daughter," said Annie Dalton, who is Ashley Moser's aunt.

Dalton said Veronica was "a vibrant 6-year-old. She was excited, she'd just learned how to swim. She was a great little girl, excited about life ? she should be at 6 years old."

The little girl was among those who died when a gunman barged into a crowded theater in a Denver suburb, set off gas canisters and opened fire, killing 12 people and wounding 58 others.

Colorado authorities Saturday released the names of the victims killed in the rampage. There were eight men, three women and Veronica Moser-Sullivan, the youngest slain. Gordon Cowden was the oldest. He was 51. All died of gunshot wounds, according to the release by the Arapahoe County coroner's office.

One of the 12, Matthew McQuinn, has been tentatively identified and is awaiting final identification, though his family's attorney confirmed to The Associated Press that McQuinn was among those killed.

Rob Scott of Dayton, Ohio, said McQuinn died after diving in front of his girlfriend and her older brother to shield them from the gunfire.

His girlfriend, Samantha Yowler, was in fair condition after being shot in the knee. Her brother, Nick Yowler, was not injured.

The couple had moved to Colorado from Ohio last fall, Scott said.

For Alex Sullivan, it was to be a weekend of fun: He planned to ring in his 27th birthday with friends at the special midnight showing of "The Dark Knight Rises" and then celebrate his first wedding anniversary Sunday.

Late Friday, Sullivan's family confirmed that police told them he was among those killed.

"He was a very, very good young man," said Sullivan's uncle, Joe Loewenguth. "He always had a smile, always made you laugh. He had a little bit of comic in him. Witty, smart. He was loving, had a big heart."

Micayla Medek, 23, also was killed.

Her father's cousin, Anita Busch, told the Associated Press that the news, while heartbreaking, was a relief for the family after an agonizing day.

"You can't go that long without knowing," she said. "I hope this evil act ... doesn't shake people's faith in God."

Navy cryptologist John Larimer went to the theater with three other sailors from nearby Buckley Air Force Base, Navy Cmdr. Jeffrey Jakuboski said. Larimer was shot and killed, and Jakuboski said losing Larimer felt like losing "one of my sons."

"Losing a sailor, whether it's in combat or whether it's in a horrific domestic situation like this, it's hard. It's tough," he said.

Larimer's family said his brother is working with the Navy to take his body home to Crystal Lake, Ill.

An Air Force reservist who worked at Buckley also was killed in the rampage. Sgt. Jesse Childress, 29, was a cyber-systems operator from Thornton, Colo., said Air Force Capt. Andrew Williams.

Williams described Childress as knowledgeable, experienced and respectful. He says Childress was athletic and played in a kickball and volleyball tournament on base. "He was always our star," Williams said.

A vigil was to be held Saturday night for Alexander J. Boik of Aurora. His family issued a statement saying that he was loved by all that knew him and was dating "a beautiful young lady" who was with him at the theater and survived.

"We want to try and focus on the beautiful lives that were ended and not the evil that is responsible," the family said.

The family of Cowden, another Aurora resident, didn't want to speak to the press Saturday afternoon.

After graduating from high school in Reno, Nev., victim Jonathan Blunk, 26, of Aurora, Colo., served in the Navy between 2004 and 2009 and most recently worked at a hardware store, according to close friend James Gill of Brighton, Colo.

Blunk had plans to re-enlist with a goal of becoming a Navy SEAL, said Gill, who lived with Blunk several years in the Navy and later in Aurora.

Gill described his friend as an avid outdoorsman and gun rights advocate.

"Pretty much every weapon the guy in the theater used he owned," Gill said. "If you asked if he was still alive, he would have said his only regret is he didn't have his sidearm with him and he couldn't do anything to stop him."

Victim Rebecca Ann Wingo, 32, had started a job several months ago as a customer relations representative at a mobile medical imaging company.

Shannon Dominguez, who worked with Wingo on weekends, said she was friendly with everyone and always seemed to be in a good mood.

"I didn't really know her well but she had a really bubbly personality," Dominguez said. "She was a pretty happy person. She just never really seemed ... like with work, she never got irritated. She was pretty happy to be here."

Alexander C. Teves, 24, graduated in June from the University of Denver with a master's degree in counseling psychology, the school said.

The university identified Teves' hometown as Phoenix. School officials said they had no other information immediately available.

An aspiring sports reporter who recently wrote a blog post about surviving a Toronto shooting was killed, the woman's brother said.

The death of Jessica Ghawi, who was also known as Jessica Redfield, was a "complete and utter shock," said her brother, Jordan Ghawi.

Jessica Ghawi, 24, moved to Denver from Texas about a year ago and friends and colleagues described her as outgoing, smart and witty.

Ghawi blogged at length about surviving the Eaton Centre mall shooting in Toronto that killed two people and sent several others to the hospital.

Jessica Ghawi wrote of the Toronto shooting: "I was shown how fragile life was on Saturday. I saw the terror on bystanders' faces. I saw the victims of a senseless crime. I saw lives change. I was reminded that we don't know when or where our time on Earth will end. When or where we will breathe our last breath."
